The tension between the individual and the group is as old as civilization and even today shapes our most enduring institutions. Society tends to flourish when it finds an appropriate balance between the competing needs of both and is at its feeblest when the pendulum swings too far in one direction or the other. We find ourselves in a moment when the pendulum is swinging from what some consider an extreme toward what others consider a different extreme. Most would agree the greatest good is best served by the pendulum coming to rest somewhere in the middle; but then, that's not the way pendulums swing.

Yes, because you tried.
