Eclipse
We left the city to catch the eclipse
At totality, brushed each other’s lips
Later, I held you close beneath a tree
Whispered three words, meaningful to me.
Sometimes I think back to that day
The anticipation, a slow sliding away
Words uttered, and unspoken
Promises made, promises broken.
The planets spin, distant and cold
Things we take for granted wither, grow old
But that afternoon is fixed in my mind
A passing dream, pale, mysterious, and fine.
