Eclipse

We escaped the city to catch the eclipse

And hugged at the moment of totality, brushed each other’s lips.

I held you close, a minute, maybe three

Whispered words in your ear, meaningful to me.

Sometimes at night I think back to that day

The hungry anticipation, the slow sliding away.

I still recall words, left unspoken

So many promises, promises broken.

Planets spin through the heavens, distant and cold

The youth we take for granted withers, grows old.

But the memory of that day stays in my mind

A passing fugitive dream, pale, bright and fine.
